Serve Directly

The Saint Clement Human Concerns Commission coordinates many ways to serve the needy directly.

Chicago Shares

Chicago Shares makes it possible for parishioners to help the hungry right here and now.

Booklets of five $1 vouchers are sold after Mass on the last Sunday of each month. Purchasers may give them to needy people, who redeem them for food and other necessities (not alcohol or tobacco) at participating stores. Purchasers may also donate the vouchers to Saint Clement for distribution to the homeless.

We always need volunteers to help explain and sell Chicago Shares to parishioners after Mass. Contact Beth Rochford or call her at 773-725-5740.

Volunteers are also needed to help find new vendors to participate in the program. Contact Tom McKenna at 773-244-0484.

Donate-A-Day

Many parishioners say that they would like to volunteer, but they don’t have the time, they’re not sure where they can be effective, or they're hesitant to take on another commitment.

Donate-A-Day allows parishioners and their families to serve once or twice a month. Events are planned for weekend afternoons and may involve painting, gardening, hosting bingo games at local nursing homes, or preparing meals for Lincoln Park Homeless Shelter, Deborah’s Place, The Night Ministry Bus, or Ronald McDonald House. Or you can join the Donate-a-Day Service Team to help determine and coordinate service events.

Saint Clement Construction Crew for Low Income Housing

The Saint Clement Construction Crew for Low Income Housing group works with Habitat for Humanity as well as other building groups too. Throughout the summer, the group works on new homes and refurbishes existing homes to help end inadequate housing.

All are welcome; both skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed. The group builds on summer Saturdays twice a month.

Sack Lunch Program

Saint Clement parishioners sign up to prepare sack lunches for distribution to the homeless on Fridays. This is a wonderful activity for small groups or families.

Saint Clement Church provides sack lunches for the homeless in our neighborhood on Fridays. Parishioners make this possible by preparing and packing six sack lunches and bringing them to the church.

To schedule your day to make six sack lunches, please contact Maggie Byrnes at 773-281-0371 ext *849.

Each sack lunch should contain:
  • 2 lunchmeat sandwiches with no condiments (Saint Clement provides condiments that are paid for through the children's collection)
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs
  • 1 bag of chips (or similar)
  • 1 piece of soft fruit (for example, orange, banana, grapes)
  • dessert (cookies or candy bar)
  • juice box
  • napkin
Please pack each lunch in a plastic grocery bag. Please do not secure the top of the bags because we add condiments before handing them out.

The six sack lunches may be dropped off at Saint Clement on Thursday between 8:30 am and 9 pm or on Friday between 8 am and 9:30 am. Please bring your lunches to the reception desk at 642 W. Deming Place.

Thank you very much for your support and generosity to the hungry in our midst!
