Catholicism: Journey Around the World and Deep into the Faith

Tuesday, March 6, 7:00pm, in Fireside Hall

The Catholicism DVD series is a rich media experience that seeks to explore, through a global journey, the living culture of the Catholic Church.  Viewers will learn what Catholics believe and why, while being immersed in the art, architecture, literature, beliefs, and practices of the Catholic tradition.

Join us on March 6 for the viewing of “Happy Are We: the Teachings of Jesus.”  We will meet in Fireside Hall in Saint Clement School at 7:00pm. To ensure your Catholicism study guide, please register one week prior to the session.

Fasting

The Catholic Church's regulations on fasting require those between the ages of 18 and 59 to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, limiting themselves to one full meal and two smaller meals each day, with no snacking between meals. Catholics age 14 and older abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent. When we fast, we unite ourselves with others who suffer from want. We also sharpen our awareness of our dependence on God for all the gifts in our lives.

Praying the Way of the Cross

Every Wednesday of Lent at 6:15pm in the church
(except Feb. 22, and April 4)

This tradition of Stations of the Cross allows us to make a pilgrimage in spirit to the scenes of Christ’s suffering and death. Through this pilgrimage we become aware that we are not alone in our own sufferings. Wednesdays during Lent (except 2/22 & 4/4) at 6:15pm in the church.

Little Black and Purple Books

These books contain daily reflections that help you remember to put God at the center of your life praying just six minutes a day, in communion with fellow parishioners can change your life. Books are available at the church entrance. The black books are for adults, purple books are for children.

What Am I Doing for Lent?

This workbook presents prayer as a powerful opportunity for renewal. You are invited to conduct a self-assessment and make resolutions to pray, serve and give. Then you translate these resolutions into commitments and reflect upon Lent through a Scripture journal. There are journals available for adults, and a separate journal available for teens. Journals are available at the church entrance.

Strengths for the Journey Program

Strengths for the Journey is a four-part series utilizing the Clifton StrengthsFinder 1.0 Assessment (TM) and dedicated to reflecting and understanding your God-given gifts. Each participant will learn how to discover his or her own personal strengths, and how to best use them to find deeper meaning and purpose in one's life, as well as to understand God's special call to wholeness. Trained facilitators will guide small groups of 8-10 parishioners through the 90-minute weekly sessions. Click here for more information. The registration deadline has passed, however you may contact Mary Cele Doyle if you are interested in participating.

Lent and the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults)

We are blessed to have in our parish several adults preparing for baptism, first Eucharist and confirmation. Their presence in our community becomes more apparent during Lent, when we witness and participate in the rites culminating in the sacraments celebrated at the Easter Vigil. Those preparing for the sacraments are called to go through a period of intense reflection before being received into the Church. The goal is for all of us to go through this period of preparation with them in order to gain a deeper knowledge and experience of Christ our Savior. These people, the Elect, are a primary symbol for us during Lent, representing our own baptism as we prepare with them for theirs. Please pray for our RCIA members during this time.

Serve

Donate-a-Day

The season of Lent reminds us that Jesus calls us to serve one another. The Saint Clement Donate-a-Day ministry offers many opportunities to serve in the community. Events are typically planned for weeknights or weekend afternoons for 2-3 hours, and are open to individuals, couples, families or groups. Opportunities include making sack lunches for the homeless, hosting a Bingo party at an area nursing home, preparing and serving dinner at the Lincoln Park Shelter, taking part in a work day at the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels, serving soup and sandwiches at the Franciscan Outreach Shelter, and more. Please see the weekly bulletin for a listing of specific dates and times for these upcoming service opportunities.

Give

Almsgiving: Monthly Food Drive

Upcoming collections: February 26 & March 25
Local food pantries have reported at least a 20% increase in requests for food due to the economic downturn. For that reason, we have implemented an ongoing food drive on the last Sunday of each month to support local parish-operated food pantries. Please place all items in the boxes located in the back of the church on designated Sundays.  Items needed: Non-perishable items such as canned fruits, vegetables, tuna, stew, soups and juice, as well as hygiene products such as deodorant, soap, toothpaste and diapers.

Almsgiving: Romero Scholarship

This year’s focus for our parish-wide Lenten almsgiving will be to support the newly formed Romero Scholarship of Saint Clement Parish. The scholarship will benefit students from our sister parish, the 22 de Abril Community in El Salvador.  These students are in extreme economic need and have the desire to attend high school or college and have academic potential, as well as a commitment to service and solidarity.

The parish will provide donation cans and a calendar of Lenten reflections based on our ongoing relationship with the 22 de Abril Community. By supporting the Romero Scholarship we will be helping young people receive an education that will change their lives, the lives of their families, and the Colonia 22 de Abril itself. Your donation will go directly to pay for the students’ tuition, books, uniforms, lab fees and transportation. Please make checks payable to: Saint Clement Parish – Romero Scholarships.

Collection boxes and materials will also be available for parishioners in the back of church. Download the brochure with further information.
